An independent and unregulated media that reserves the capacity to criticize the state is the hallmark of democracy. The duty of the media is to hold the mirror to the society and expose the evils. Democracy sustains due to the reasoned skepticism of the citizens and media acts as a leash to rein our representatives. In several cases such as the Nirbhaya case, the media appealed to the conscience of the society and pulverized the minds of people. The media supported Anna Hazare and held the government by the scruff of its neck to wring out legislation.
