International Film Festival of India
The 47th edition of the International Festival of India (IFFI) will be at Goa this year. It has its focus on the Republic of Korea as an acknowledgement of its force.
The fest will bring contemporary Korean films to cine-goers, while honouring renowned filmmaker Im Kwon-taek with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The festival will also witness the presence of several Korean film personalities including Yeon Sang-ho (director of the recent hit, Train to Busan), Lee Joon-ik (director of King and the Clown) and novelist–turned–filmmaker, Zhang Lu.
Parliament erupts over note ban
While the second day of discussion on demonetisation was disrupted in the Rajya Sabha, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day after pandemonium broke out, with the Opposition demanding a debate on the currency chaos in the country under Rule 54 that entails division of votes. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan agreed to discuss the issue only under Rule 193.
After day-long discussion, the House passed the resolution in the evening by 16 votes. While 41 members voted for the resolution, 25 opposed it.
Demonetisation impact Modi’s “Neighbourhood First’ policy.
The Narendra Modi government’s demonetisation may hurt the Prime Minister’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
Modi made it clear that the expansion of bilateral ties with neighbours will remain a cornerstone of his government’s foreign policy.
However, Modi’s November 8 announcement on demonetisation has rattled countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar which encourage the use of the Indian rupee as a parallel currency within their borders.
Indian Navy inducted 4 indigenously developed Sonars
The Indian Navy inducted four types of indigenously developed Sonars that will boost its surveillance capability. The systems have been designed and developed by Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, a Kochi-based laboratory of DRDO.
The system includes Abhay, which is a compact hull mounted sonar for shallow water crafts; Humsa UG, which is an upgrade for the Humsa sonar system.NACS, or the Near-field Acoustic Characterisation System and AIDSS (Advanced Indigenous Distress sonar system for submarines).
Nahid Hassanzadeh gets 22nd Kolkata International Film Festival Award
The first feature film by Iranian Nahid Hassanzadeh, won the best film award at the 22nd Kolkata International Film Festival. The best director award went to 30-year-old Chinese filmmaker Yao Tingting, for his directorial debut, the feature film Yesterday Once More.
Accepting the award, midwife-turned-filmmaker Nahid Hassanzadeh spoke about the difficulties in making films and how, as midwife and director, she has been “involved in the issues and problems of women in the country .
The film’s plot is based around Ghadir, a chemical plant worker who, after being imprisoned without trial for a year, returns home and finds that his unmarried daughter has given birth to a child, a social taboo.
India signed revised DTAA with Cyprus
The Protocol for the revised agreement — which will replace the existing agreement signed by two countries in Nicosia on November 18 .Three months after Cabinet approved signing of revised DTAA with Cyprus, India has now signed a new double tax avoidance pact with this Island nation, which is a popular tax haven.
New Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) provides for source based taxation of capital gains arising from alienation of shares, instead of residence based taxation provided under the existing DTAA. However, a grandfathering clause has been provided for investments made prior to 1st April, 2017, in respect of which capital gains would continue to be taxed in the country of which taxpayer is a resident
Student Startup Policy launched by Mehbooba Mufti
Student Startup Policy launched by President Jammu and Kashmir Government has launched Jhelum-Tawi flood recovery project to give push to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure post-2014 floods in the state.
The project which is funded World Bank was formally launched Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar
New International calling app by Reliance Global –RGC India
Anil Ambani led Reliance Communications’ international calling service Reliance Global Call on Friday launched RGC India, an calling app that allows international calling at Rs 1.4 a minute.
The Reliance Global Call service is available to all mobile phone and land-line users of the country—including prepaid and post-paid subscribers across all telecom networks.
Customers can register for the RGC service via the website, or download the Smartphone app from Android Play Store and iOS App Store.
Reliance Global Call also announced an introductory offer with the launch under which customers can avail talk-time worth Rs 200 on sign-up with Rs 100.
Nine bills to be passed
The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre likely to push its legislative agenda that includes passage of pending legislations for rollout of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the surrogacy regulation bill.
Bills to be introduced, consideration and passing are:
- The Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Bill, 2016
- The Integrated GST Bill, 2016
- The GST (Compensation for loss of revenue) Bill, 2016
- The Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2016
- The Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016
- The Divorce (Amendment) Bill, 2016
- The Collection of Statistics (Amendment) Bill, 2016
- The Constitution Scheduled Tribes (Order) Amendment Bill, 2016
- The Admiralty (Jurisdiction and Settlement of Maritime Claims), 2016
P V Sindhu – China open super series
Olympic silver-medallist P.V. Sindhu advanced to the semifinals of the China Open after defeating local favourite He Bingjiao in straight games at the $700,000 Super Series Premier event.
Seventh seed Sindhu notched up a 22-20, 21-10 win over Bingjiao, who has won four titles — Bitburger Open, French Open, Japan Open and Swiss Open — this season in women’s singles competition.
In men’s singles, Ajay Jayaram could not get across the reigning Olympic champion, two-time World champion and All England champion Chen Long of China, suffering a 15-21, 14-21 defeat in a 40-minute clash.
Mumbai Indian get new coach
Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has succeeded Australian Ricky Ponting as Head Coach of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2017 season.
A press release from MI said Ponting’s two-year contract is nearing completion.
Jayawardene has featured in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab, Kerala Tuskers and Delhi Daredevils.
Jagdish Singh Khehar appointed as executive chairman NALSA
The Union government announced that Jagdish Singh Khehar, a judge of the Supreme Court, will be the new Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). He succeeds Anil R. Dave.
NALSA has been constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, to provide free legal services to weaker sections of society.
The aim is to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reasons of economic or other disabilities.
NALSA also organises Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.
NALSA identifies specific categories of the marginalised and excluded groups and formulates various schemes for the implementation of preventive and strategic legal service programmes.
Lifetime Achievement Award for Pt Hari Prasad Chourasia
Pt Hari Prasad Chourasia has been conferred this year’s Sumitra Charat Ram Award for lifetime achievement in the field of Indian classical music.
He has worked as a music director for Indian films, besides collaborating with several international musicians.
Pt Hari Prasad Chourasia is Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awardee .
