Error Spotting

Spot the error questions are asked in all the exams conducted by SSC. The exams could be SSC CGL tier 1, tier 2, CHSL, MTS, CPO, etc. If a student wants to score well in this section then he must go through all the grammar rules and then go through all the previous year's questions. After solving those questions the student should try to do as many mock tests as he can. All the questions that are given below have been asked in SSC CHSL 2021 Tier 1. If any student finds it difficult to do any question he must refer to the detailed solution that is given after the questions.

Solutions

Sol.1.(a)‘Did’ always take the first/base form of the verb(V1) with it. However, ‘submit’ is the first form of ‘submitted’. Hence, ‘why didn’t you submit’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.2.(b)The given sentence is in the passive voice so the verb must be used in its past form(provided) and not in the continuous form(providing). Hence, ‘were provided’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.3.(b) Succeed is a verb that means to manage to achieve what you want. But, success is a noun. However, the given sentence needs a verb. Hence, ‘never succeed’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.4.(d) The later part of the given sentence is in the past tense(allowed) so the verb must be used in its past form(limited) and not in the continuous form(limiting). Hence. ‘the new rules only limited’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.5.(d)“Has/Have + V3(third form of the verb)” is grammatically the correct structure for the later part of the sentence which is in present perfect tense. Hence, ‘has prepared( V3) well‘ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.6.(d) We cannot use ‘able’ and ‘can’ together in a sentence because it will become a case of superfluousness(not necessary). However, in the given sentence, the narrator is talking about a day(Monday) in the future & we use ‘will’ in future tense. Hence, ‘will not be able to’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.11.(b) Employees take the preposition “in” when used as doing something.‘Be employed in doing something’ is grammatically the correct structure. Similarly, the given sentence states that thousands of people in Telangana are employed in granite companies. Hence, ‘in Telangana are employed in’ is the most appropriate answer.  

Sol.12.(d) The correct grammatical phrase is ‘to keep an eye on something’ which means to watch something/someone carefully. Hence, ‘an eye on things’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.13.(b) The given sentence is in the past tense(had mistaken) so the verb must be used in its simple past form(wondered) and not in the base/present form(wonder). Hence, ‘wonder’ will be replaced by ‘wondered’ to make the given sentence grammatically correct.

Sol.15.(b) Worse is used as a comparative degree like your project is worse than Rahul’s project. But, ‘worst’ is used as a superlative degree which is used to show the highest degree of anything like most beautiful, best, fastest, etc. However, the given sentence states that 2020 graduates will face job depression of the highest degree since the Great Depression. Hence, ‘will face the worst job depression’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.17.(a) Bunch means a number of things, usually of the same type, fastened or growing together. However, we generally write a bunch of things. Hence, a bunch of coriander leaves is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.18.(b) According to the “Subject-Verb Agreement Rule”, a singular subject always takes a singular verb and a plural subject always takes a plural verb. In the given sentence, ‘teachers’ is a Plural subject that will take ‘teach’ as a plural verb. Hence, ‘teach us’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.19.(d) Until is used to describe an effect that will take place & Still is used to denote the continuity of the action. In the given sentence, the narrator described the continuity of the action of walking. So, we will remove the word ‘until’. Hence, ‘I was still a little weak’ is the most appropriate answer

Sol.20.(d) Replace “who” with “which”. In the given sentence, the halting of air travel due to lockdown was exact. Hence, ‘which was halted’ is the most appropriate answer. 

Sol.21.(c) The sentence is grammatically correct.

Sol.22.(c) There is a prepositional error in the given sentence. The use of ‘for’ after ‘offer’ is irrelevant so it should be removed. Hence, ‘most hotels offer their guests complimentary breakfast’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.23.(c) ‘Did’ always takes the first/base form of the verb(V1) with it. The base form of ‘kept’ is ‘keep’. Hence, ‘keep’ is the most appropriate answer. 

Sol.24.(a) We cannot write ‘return’ and ‘back’ together because it becomes a case of superfluousness(not necessary). Hence, ‘Pavan returned home’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.25.(a) According to the “Subject-Verb Agreement Rule”, ‘One of/ Each of/ Most of/ Either of + Plural Subject + Singular verb’ is grammatically the correct structure. In the given sentence, we will use a singular verb(forms). Hence, ‘ the most feared forms’ is the most appropriate answer.

Sol.27.(a) The latter part of the given sentence is in the past perfect tense(had seen) so the former part must have a verb in its simple past form(parted) and not in the base form(part).
