• The pandemic will pull down India’s Gross Domestic Product by 7.7 per cent in 2020-21, as per the first advance estimate of GDP released by the National Statistical Office (NSO)

• This will be the biggest annual contraction in records going back to 1952, according to Bloomberg.

• The estimate by the NSO was close to the Reserve Bank of India’s estimate of 7.5 per cent contraction. 

• Economy trackers had estimated annual real GDP growth to be in the range of negative 6.5 to negative 9.9 percent.

• Advance estimates are important as the Union Budget uses these numbers for assuming GDP growth rates at current prices for the next financial year, on the basis of which all crucial numbers such as the fiscal deficit and tax numbers will be calculated.

• देश के सकल घरेलू उत्पाद यानी जीडीपी में चालू वित्तवर्ष 2020-21 के दौरान 7.7 फीसदी गिरावट का अनुमान है, जबकि पिछले वित्तवर्ष में देश की आर्थिक विकास दर 4.2 फीसदी दर्ज की गई थी।

• राष्ट्रीय सांख्यिकी कार्यालय यानी NSO द्वारा चालू वित्तवर्ष की GDP का पहला अग्रिम अनुमान जारी किया गया। 

• 2020-21 का अग्रिम अनुमान चालू वित्त वर्ष की तीसरी और चौथी तिमाही में आर्थिक गतिविधियों में तेजी से सुधार की ओर इशारा कर रहा है। 

• जिसकी वजह से चालू वित्त वर्ष में इकोनॉमी में गिरावट अब 7.7 फीसदी ही रहने का अनुमान है।
